The Takoma Park Singers was founded in the late 1960's by a group of music loving friends and neighbors in Takoma Park, Maryland, who shared a particular passion for choral singing. While musical styles and tastes have changed, appeared, and disappeared in the almost half-century of our group's existence, we have stayed faithful to one constant -- a true love of song that binds communities and bridges generations.
Today, we number about 30 singers and enjoy performing a wide repertoire that includes classical, gospel, americana, broadway tunes, folk songs, and popular music. Listen to selections from past concerts.
Carole Whittam is the moving force of the Takoma Park Singers. Carole has been our director since 1981; before becoming director, she'd been a singing member of the chorus since 1978. Carole has had a life-long love affair with music, nurtured along with her family and career in public school education. Asked what's held our group together over the years, Carole emphasized "love of music and the rapport and connections built among the singers." And she noted "We strive for excellence in performing both accessible and challenging pieces, but what is really important is that we just enjoy the music and the singing."
From September to June of each year, we rehearse on Wednesday evenings at the Piney Branch Elementary School, 7510 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, MD (click here for directions). The concert season includes a winter Holiday Concert and a Spring Concert, as well as community outreach concerts at retirement homes throughout the area. Check here for this season's schedule.
